Towns and villages on the Central Coast of NSW

Woy Woy

woy-woy-webWoy Woy is a coastal town and is a popular holiday and long weekend destination Woy Woy is part of the City of Gosford and is wedged on a peninsula between the western shores of Brisbane Waters and the Brisbane Waters National Park, providing magnificent views of the waterways. The words Woy Woy came from the language of an aboriginal tribe called the Guringgai, it is said to mean ‘Much Water’ or ‘Big Lagoon’ Woy Woy is a holiday and retirement center haven, located 8 km south of Gosford and 85 km north of Sydney. The area offers warm summer weather with opportunities presented for boating, swimming, fishing and water sport activities.

Gosford

gosford-webGosford is the major commercial centre on the Central Coast and is located at the northern end of Brisbane Water, 79 km north of Sydney. Retirees, commuters and young families are drawn to the area by the mild climate, stunning beaches, bushland and state forests. The freeway and the electric train service have ensured easy access to Sydney.
Geographically, the area is characterised by steep hills and valleys with surrounding state forests to the west and north-west. Tuggerah Lakes are situated to the north. Tourism, the seafood industry and forestry are major contributors to the city's economy.
The Central Coast has become a primary tourism destination for Sydneysiders, fishing being of particular interest. Since World War II it has developed as part of metropolitan Sydney with the construction of the freeway in the 1960s and the improvement of the rail service in the 1970s. Over the years, as Gosford has developed as a commuter, holiday and retirement centre, agricultural and horticultural industries have declined. Gosford was proclaimed a city in 1980.

Terrigal

terrigal-webTerrigal  - a delightful visitor/tourist destination on the Central Coast
The area is a popular residential, holiday resort and retirement centre on the Central Coast. It is located 91 km north of Sydney. Visitors are attracted to Terrigal for the opportunity to enjoy swimming, surfing and water sports, not to mention the natural scenery. Those keen on fishing will find snapper, flathead and jewfish and bream, flathead and blackfish in the surf.
The Esplanade, along the beachfront in Terrigal, is made particularly special by the well established stand of Norfolk Island Pines that line the foreshore. The most prominent natural feature of Terrigal is the headland known as 'The Skillion' at Broken Head which can be accessed via a walkway alongside the beach beneath the Norfolk Island Pines.
A truly special part of our NSW coastline!

Avoca Beach

avoca-webAvoca Beach is a popular weekend and holiday destination and is located 95 km north of Sydney. It is situated towards the southern end of a stretch of coastline from MacMasters Beach in the south to The Entrance in the north.
These days, the Avoca Beach area is a popular holiday destination for wealthy North Shore residents in Sydney. With an emphasis on beach and water sport activities, Avoca Beach is ideal for family orientated holidays and outings.  Its wooded hills and tranquility provide a unique setting for a great getaway!

Toukley

toukley-webToukley is a large town, 107 km north of Sydney on the Central Coast. It is set on the eastern side of the Wallarah Point Bridge which spans the waters of Tuggerah and Budgewoi Lakes.
There is some dispute about the origin of the name “Toukley” – one being “many brambles” and the other being “Toukley ouckley” meaning “rough one side”.
As the Lakes are relatively shallow and shark – free, they provide the perfect water setting for water sports and fishing. Tuggerah Lake is ideal for fishing from the foreshore - blackfish, whiting, mullet, snapper, bream, flounder, tailor, flathead, jewfish, tarwhine, crabs and prawns are usually in abundance

The Entrance

the-entrance-webThe Entrance is an attractive destination on the Central Coast and is located 99 km north of Sydney.
As a resort and retirement destination, The Entrance offers beautiful surf beaches, huge lakes and a delightful, foreshore parkland. The centrepiece of the town is “The Waterfront”, an open-air mall replete with cafes and eateries in an atmosphere accented by many fountains.
This is another Central Coast paradise for fishing for flathead, whiting, bream, blackfish and prawns. Fish for blackfish from the sea-wall that adjoins the boatshed near the bridge.

Wyong

Wyong is a major administrative and commercial centre on the Central Coast and is located 92 km north of Sydney. Two possible meanings for the word “Wyong” is an edible yam or a 'place of running water'.
A visitor can explore near-by Tuggerah Lake and the beautiful Yarramalong Valley.

From the early 20C, the area began to develop as a weekend getaway for Sydney and Newcastle residents and is now a major destination as a base to explore the region.

The Hinterland

The Hinterland beyond the coastal strip of the Central Coast, offers tranquillity amidst the spectacular countryside of the Watagan State Forest and Mountains and the Dooralong and Yarramalong Valleys. A visit to the stunning Somersby Falls is a ‘must do’ for a family looking for a picnic spot with an abundance of wildlife. The Hinterland awaits exploration:

  • The Big Flower at Ourimbah
  • Somersby Falls
  • Australian Reptile Park at Somersby
  • Mangrove Creek Dam
  • Horse Riding at Peats Ridge and Yarramalong
  • Macadamia Nut Farm at Yarramalong

cooranbong-webCooranbong is located 116 km north of Syndey, and situated at the base of the Watagan Mountains. Cooranbong is the major gateway to the Watagan Mountains state forest, so rich in the natural beauty of Australian flora and fauna where spectacular views will take your breathe away providing campsites, lookouts, walking trails, picnic areas and well sign posted forest drives. Cooranbong is a quiet township, which blends the history and charm of yesterday with inviting country. The town center has a nice little restaurant and a variety of shops which include the well known and popular Elephant Shop selling a large range of Amethysts, Agate, Onyxware, Crystals, hand carved furniture and imported goods from South-East Asia. Morpeth

Morpeth is another of the Hunter Valley’s charming, historic townships.
Situated on the banks of the Hunter River, this inland River Port is 37km north-west of Newcastle. It has an abundance of Art and Craft, Antique and Curios shops housed in the historic buildings that line the streetscape.
