Laguna 19th Annual Art Exhibition 28 - 29 August
Take a drive to the historic Wollombi Valley to see the best creative master-pieces the Valley has to offer at the annual Laguna Art Show. This year’s Art Show will begin with a gala Opening Night on Friday 27th August. The exhibition will be open to the public all weekend (28th & 29th August) from 10am to 4pm. The Laguna Art Show is one of the most prestigious and longest running art shows in the Wollombi Valley, featuring works by both renowned Valley artists as well as emerging creative talents, with the quality of work exhibited each year constantly surpassing the last. Past exhibitions have included sculptures in wood and steel, jewellery, watercolours, oils, leadlight, photography, pottery, acrylics, etchings, crayon, pencil and handmade bush furniture. The feature artist for 2010 is long time Wollombi local resident, Col Harrison. Col has been painting for well over 40 years and his work often reflects his past lives as station rouseabout, rabbit trapper, cattle drover and farm amongst other endeavours. The featured piece is titled, ‘Looking For Strays’ (pictured). Opening night is highly anticipated and entry is $15 which includes entry to the 2010 exhibition and a glass of wine in a complementary Art Show wine glass. This year, the restaurant will be serving a curry extravaganza (no booking necessary), there will be light entertainment and the opportunity to be the first to purchase the piece of art that catches your eye. Over the weekend, the Arty Farty Café will be open for coffee, tea, sandwiches, cakes and slices and there will also be a BBQ lunch available on both days from 12-2pm. This year’s Art Show will once again be displayed in the Laguna Community Hall situated in the heart of Laguna village community (15kms south of the historic Wollombi village). The proceeds from the event go to furthering the education experience of the students at Laguna Public School. Tickets for opening night, $15 - are available by phoning Laguna Public School on 02 4998 8251. Entry to the exhibition over the weekend is by gold coin donation.
Crossroads Tour
24 July to 15 August
The Australian String Academy is excited to present the 2010 Crossroads Festival and Tour, from 24 July to 15 August. In our third year, we have expanded the ‘Crossroads’ concept more than ever. As well as a three-concert Festival on the Central Coast and a special event in the Hunter Valley, the Wilhelm Quartet (London UK), returning from a successful visit in 2009, will be travelling throughout regional NSW and Canberra to both remote regions and capital cities for a series of high quality chamber music concerts, collectively known as the Crossroads Tour. The Hon. Peter Primrose, Minister for Youth and Volunteering and also Chris Gardiner the CEO of PCYC in NSW, will speak at the charity fundraising concert in the Hunter Valley at Hungerford Hill Winery in aid of the Cessnock PCYC, on the 1st of August at 3pm. Hungerford Hill Winery is located at 1 Broke Road, Pokolbin. High Tea will be served at the fabulous Muse restaurant at the conclusion of the concert and formalities. This very special charity concert in the Hunter Valley has been kindly initiated by Klara Kaye from Imag Monthly Tourist magazine who has been a valued sponsor for some years now. This event been enabled by the generous support of the James N. Kirby Foundation, and as well as the concert series, a significant educational component has been developed and the quartet will be inspiring hundreds of students in regional conservatoriums and upwards of 2000 students in NSW primary schools, in sharing the joys of chamber music for many who will be experiencing it for the first time. Some of Australia’s leading chamber musicians and most exciting string artists will be returning to the Festival on the Central Coast, including Charmian Gadd, Phillip Shovk and Chris Pidcock, for exciting collaborations with the Wilhelm Quartet. The artistic wealth on the Central Coast will also continue to be enriched with performances such as an exciting collaboration with the Concertante Ensemble and a world premiere by Central Coast-residing composer Chris Sainsbury. We welcome you to another exciting year of chamber music at the third Crossroads Festival and Tour, 2010! For full details of the festival and tour including the brochure, visit www.asa.edu.au/crossroads or phone Ruth Donnelly on 0437 399896.
Gresford Rodeo “The Premier Rodeo of the Hunter Highlands”
Saturday 28th August, 2010
As has become tradition for the last weekend in August each year, this annual spectacular will deliver no less than nine hours of action and entertainment so bring a blanket and pick a spot on “the hill” and get up close and personal with some of the best sports action you will ever see.
A full program of events will be run again this year, including the Steer Wrestling, Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing and, of course, the event everyone scrambles to watch, the Open Bull Ride. The events are split into a series of rounds that are randomly run throughout the day so there is always something different to watch. In addition to our regular line up on Saturday, we are hosting a Junior Rodeo the night before (Friday 27th), so if you are coming up early to get a good camping spot you will find all our catering facilities open for business on Friday night.
If you have never been to a rodeo before, you are in for a treat as you watch world, national and state champions compete against each other to win competition points to ensure themselves a place at the next National Championships. Competitors in rodeos must abide by strict rules of competition designed to protect them, the animals and test their skills. Take for example the Steer Wrestlers – Steer Wrestling is commonly called the Big Man’s Event. A steer is given a head start into the arena and then chased on horseback. Another competitor known as the ‘Hazer’ keeps the steer running straight. The wrestler must lean out and grasp the steer by the horns, change direction or stop the steer and twist it to the ground. If the steer gets loose after the wrestler has jumped from his horse, he is allowed only one step to catch the steer. All this must be done within 30 seconds!
Children’s entertainment, novelty stalls and clothing outlets will also be available. The Rodeo starts at 10.00am and continues through until around 9.00pm when patrons will be able to sit back and enjoy listening or dancing to music provided by one of the best bands we have ever come across ‘The Haz Bins’. These guys have played for us for the past 4 years and they have been so popular, we had to invite them back again.
Entry to the Rodeo on Saturday will set you back $15 adult, $6 child U15 /concession or you can purchase a family ticket for $35. There is a licensed facility on the grounds (sorry folks – no BYO). There are food outlets on the grounds serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and patrons are encouraged to utilise the onsite camping facilities and stay overnight. For enquiries please ring the Secretary, Rosemary Wall, on 4938 9462. |
