IMAG PUBLICATIONS PTY LTD. publishes monthly, regional, visitor information magazines for 7 regions in New South Wales. All of these magazines are locally owned and operated. Presently IMAG PUBLICATIONS PTY LTD is looking for additional Franchisee Owners to operate magazines in a number of regional areas in NSW and Victoria.

These areas include:
NSW:

  1. The Northern Rivers (The Clarence River to Tweed Heads)
  2. Canberra and surrounding NSW country towns.

In Victoria

  1. The Goldfields Region (Ballarat & Bendigo area)
  2. The Mornington Peninsular
  3. Yarra Valley & The Dandenongs
  4. North Eastern Victoria (Albury, Wine Region, Alpine way)
  5. Geelong & the Great Ocean Road

Each franchisee derives his or her revenue from the sale of advertising space in a magazine.

The principle tasks in each franchisee’s business include:the sale of advertising, distribution of the magazines within your territory, servicing your customers, collecting editorial and other material for the magazine, collating all material for each magazine edition, proofing your artwork before it goes to print and doing some simple administration and reporting work

  • transport of the printed magazines to your base
  • out of territory distribution
  • training and back up services
  • any presentation material the group requires
  • on-going marketing and product research

The history of iMag 

This Month Publications Pty Ltd, established in 1991, started a magazine called This Month in the Blue Mountains. The magazine was expressly designed and marketed to the travelling public.

Much research produced a niche market orientated product format, which was quickly applied to establishing similar magazines in other tourism regions in New South Wales. The magazines were run as company publications until 1995 when the company began franchising the magazines.

During the next few years the company began franchising undeveloped regions. In these new regions, the company would go to the market and apply established selection criteria to check for product viability, then look for a franchisee to train and start on the road to selling the advertising for his or her new magazine. Selection criteria for franchisees were developed and new magazines were started this way.

In February 1997 a manager was appointed to develop the franchise business and to achieve closer one to one working relationships and support for franchisees.

In August 2001, the manager and five of the then current franchisees formed a new company, Monthly iMag Pty Limited, to continue the franchising and publication of the magazine business. The magazine underwent some design and format changes to bring it up to date with current market expectations. Since then the magazine group has gained further market penetration and has started new franchised magazines.

In early 2006 the business was purchased by the then owners of the Sapphire and Eurobodalla Monthly iMag Franchise, David & Linda Borrow.

At present, we are looking to extend the magazine network in NSW and Vic.

The iMag organisation

The company contracts the services of skilled designers who compile our magazines each month. The same compiler works on the same magazine each month so that a rapport can develop between an owner and the asigned graphic artist. There are presently five compilers, some of whom are asked to participate in any design review.

All printing and transport is contracted out. We have been with our current printer for some time now and have established a great working relationship, giving us competitive pricing and excellent consistency of a high standard production.

We are a small, relationship and service based business, with a professional home/office base and a number of excellent contractors, retained consultants and long term suppliers. Above all, we have an outstanding and much valued team of franchisees running magazine businesses.

What are you entering into?

It is a business with a well-researched, successful and proven product. It is a business with a well-developed set of business practices and systems.

We have also developed proven selection criteria for both suitable regions and franchisees that are strictly tested before starting any new magazine. We reveal a lot about our business and invite you to speak to other franchisees before you are asked to make a decision and later in the process you will be asked to reveal a little about yourself. This is necessary to maximise the chance of us both making the right assessment. After signing your Franchise Agreement, you will receive in-house training and field training during the set up period, a manual, all stationery, a sales presentation folder and training notes.

We will undertake a careful familiarisation of your region during which, together we will finalise the shape, styling, flavour and content of your magazine from which we will prepare all presentation material for you to commence the sales process. With regular assistance, encouragement and advice, you will sell the advertising space (mostly six or twelve month contracts) to establish your magazine.

Our complete training, sales presentation kit, reference manual and constant backup service, together with our expert team of designers and compilers will leave you free and organised to sell your ads, establish your distribution network following our formula and to develop strong customer relationships.

You are joining a system with established systems and suppliers. Our name is well established and our product enjoys wide acceptance. You will enjoy ongoing management contact and assistance.

Skills and requirements

Selling is not something you’re born to do. It is an acquired skill requiring continual thought and practice.

You need to:

* Have a personable manner
* Enjoy dealing with people
* Have good communication skills
* Organisational skills
* Some sales or business experience
* Be motivated*Have a drivers license
* Have some computer literacy skills, even if only in a simple word processing program and internet   and email use
* Have some reasonably, basic writing skills
* A strong determination to succeed

Equipment required
You will need to have a reliable car, a personal computer, some basic software, the financial computer program MYOB. an internet connection, answering machine and fax, a digital camera and a suitable dedicated room at home for your office.

Costs of a new franchise
* There is a single up front fee for the term of the agreement of $15,500.
* You will need working capital of about $20,000.00 for start up and the first edition’s production costs.
* You will need the equipment listed previously, plus an internet connection for viewing artwork etc.
* You will need other monthly payments as per the Franchise Agreement.
