On Saturday the 27th March we have the ‘superstar’ talent quest for any young up and coming ‘stars’ under 18 years old. There is up to $600 in prize money for the winning entrants. For young and old alike we also have a ‘Famous Fifties’ competition with a $1000 prize for the winner. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be Buddy Holly, Johnny O’Keefe, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley or another 50’s star, then book your spot in the contest. Another exciting aspect of the Nostalgia festival is the extensive display of classic cars and hot rods. Motoring enthusiasts will love seeing the variety of cars and those of you who own one, cruise on down to be a part of the event on Saturday 27th (100 car spaces) or Sunday 28th (400 car spaces). Make sure you book your car in so not to be disappointed. There will also be ‘Vegas style’ weddings on Saturday, anyone is welcome to book in and renew their wedding vows in 50’s and 60’s style. You will be transported to the main stage via a vintage car and receive your ‘vow renewal certificate’ along with photographs of your special day. Galleries and Theatres in the Hunter Region
Whats on at the Galleries this month
Cessnock Regional Art Gallery March Exhibition Exhibition: Hadyn Wilson Stories from the Archive: A Palaeobotanical Narrative Ends Sunday 14 March 2010. Wollombi artist Hadyn Wilson’s latest exhibition Stories from the Archive: A Palaeobotanical Narrative explores his ongoing interest in the art historical past, and his deepening engagement with the natural world. Seen together for the first time, the works document the artist’s personal and artistic journey. Broadly and collectively this body of work explores relationships between past and present, the real and surreal, history and myth. From his base at Wollombi, influences as diverse as 17th Century Dutch flower painting, the landscapes of the Australian Impressionists, detailed notebooks of 19th century naturalists and explorers such as Banks and Darwin and botanical art all find their way into his work. The results can often be surreal – the familiar juxtaposed with the strange, figures at ease in alien landscapes, humans reduced to the scale of insects, plants so large they block the sky – all executed in passages of very fine painting. The phrase ‘True Fictions’ has been used in relation Hadyn’s work and it is a fitting description for in most of these works Hadyn takes the fact of the fossil or botanical archive and ‘imagines’ them into existence, creating places none of us have ever been to before. This is a not to be missed and a not to be repeated show. These paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces have been gathered from private and public collections across Australia to make this exhibition possible. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday between 10am and 5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
Newcastle Theatre Company presents the powerful Tennessee Williams play Orpheus Descending Opening Friday March 12th Directed by John McFadden, Orpheus Descending is a modern version of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, a story that deals, in the most elemental fashion, with the power of passion, art, and imagination to redeem and revitalize life, giving it new meaning. After a young charismatic musician descends on a small, repressive southern town he forms a relationship with a passionate woman with a tragic past who is trapped in a bad marriage. The play exhibits many of Williams’ typical themes: loneliness and desire, sexuality, repression, and the longing for freedom. On another level, it is also about trying to live bravely and honestly in a fallen world. Violence lurks just below the surface, and it bursts into the open at the play's end. The play set in Southern Gothic melodramatic glory is rich in imagery, lush, poetic lyrical dialogue and symbolism is recognized as one of Williams's weightier plays. The play runs through to Saturday March 27th and bookings may be made by contacting Newcastle Theatre Company on 4952 4958, 90 De Vitre Street, Lambton.
